Shadow Club-Information Literacy Collaboration Project Lesson Plan #1
Reflection:
I developed this collaborative lesson plan for an 8th grade language arts class as an information literacy/technology integration project for TE 869: Introduction to School Library Media,. There are many times where collaborating with a librarian would enhance the learning in a lesson or project, but teachers often do not have the time or knowledge to do so. In pairing with the librarian, many of the information literacy standards can be covered and students will learn not only what they need to learn for their core classes, but also skills that will better prepare them for high school and beyond.
I collaborated with Molly Blackburn, one of our 7/8 grade language arts teachers (Standard 1, Element 1.3 Instructional partner). Eighth graders at Buffett Middle School read The Shadow Club for novel groups each year, so I developed this project with the intent that teachers could use it year after year (1.1 Knowledge of learners, learning). It incorporates the literature element that is needed in the classroom as well as provides 21st century skills instruction (1.4 Integration of 21st century skills) and use of some online materials that can be updated when newer resources are available.
One of the major issues that we had in implementing this project is the availability of computers for students to use in order to complete the requirements. Although we are a technology magnet, there are not computers for every student in every class. We have a computer cart that can be used in one classroom on each team, but if the cart is being used by another classroom, it can be difficult to get students online. But a large piece of the 21st Century Skill set is based on the inclusion of technology and teaching students how and when to use it. With the way that our society is plugged in, it would be beneficial to have a computer for each student in most classes so that we can more easily incorporate technology into daily instruction.
Like the other collaborative project in this portfolio, which was created to enhance student learning through the use of 21 Century tools, this activity showcases 3.1 Efficient and ethical information seeking behavior, 3.2 Access to information, and 3.3 Information technology.
