This artifact was a collaboration with the seventh grade language arts teacher in conjunction with a genre series in the language arts curriculum (Standard 1.3 Instructional Partner) in the class TE871. Students were asked to read different examples of memoirs in order to learn about how they are written, why they are written and how to write one themselves (Standard 1.4, Integration of 21st Century skills, 3.4 Research and knowledge creation) . They learned about language and style choices, how to interest the reader and what makes a good memoir.
In the role of the school librarian, my goal was to bring technology into the language arts classroom. Although our school is a technology magnet, we do not often use technology in the language arts classroom. I wanted to use this unit as a way to encorporate computers and current real world technology into our education lesson, so that language arts standards were covered, as well as the 21st century media standards. In this lesson, the school librarian would teach students how to do an image search and site sources appropriately (Standard 1.4, Integration of 21st century skills, 3.4 Research and knowledge creation). Students are well versed on how to find things on the internet, but very few truly understand what it means to site sources and give credit appropriately (3.3 Information technology). This is a skill that they will need in their education in middle school, high school and beyond. With guidance and practice, it will be less time consuming (Standards 1.4, Integration of 21st century skills). Also included in the lesson plan is accommodations made for those with special learning needs (Standard 1.1, Knowledge of learners and learning style).
