One of the biggest concerns for teachers in the core curriculum areas is the administration of the Nebraska State Assessments (NeSA tests). The NeSA tests are administered in Math and Reading in 3-8 and 11 grades. The NeSA Science is administered in 5 and 8, and the NeSA Writing is given in the 4, 8 and 11 grades.
For professional development, the librarian, along with the instructional facilitator, would plan for a 40 minute session to review the procedures of administering the NeSA tests (4.1 Networking with the library community, 4.2 Professional Development, 4.3 Leadership). There would be a time for questions, an evaluation so that the presentation could be improved, and some follow up questions in case someone needed more support. These aspects of the plan would allow for all staff to feel comfortable with the process and allow those that needed further instruction, a way to easily access it. Although the librarian isn't directly involved in the administration of the NeSA tests, they could be used as a resource for administration, prep and make-up testing.
All of the NeSA tests given in at the middle school level are computer based, which means that each teacher giving the tests needs to have access to enough laptops for all students in each block for 4 days in a row (as tests are administered in two sessions, each session is given in one block). Each team has a computer cart with laptops, but there are often multiple teachers giving the test in the same curriculum area at the same time. This would be an area where the librarian could assist. There are laptop carts that belong to the library, which could be scheduled out in order to allow all teachers that needed them to have access to computers during the testing window. This was not addressed in the plan, but could be easily added.
